The movie is a trio of interwoven stories, each following the trips undertaken by three disparate people. Roberto, a travelling salesman, hopes to win the love of a young widow by driving a specially-ordered birthday cake to her son. En route to San Juliàn he encounters the second protagonist, Don Justo, an old man travelling to the city to find redemption and his long-lost dog. Meanwhile, Maria is a young mother so poor that the prospect of winning a food processor on a gaudy game show compels her to travel 200 miles to be a contestant.
It's as though Sorin is a fellow traveller, watching silently from the passenger seat. He allows the film to develop slowly, taking it through social commentary to to some wonderfully underplayed humour, courtesy of Javier Lombardo, who excels as Roberto. The scenery is striking throughout.
